Vampires in History
Vlad Dracula Tepes:
In the COTC universe the vampire count does exist. However, in the story line "The Council of Three" we find that his ashes are housed within the Council vault. Although Dracula himself may be dead, those whom he sired and their vampiric descendents remain loyal to him. Late in the story a group of vampires try and resurrect the Count, but they fail. It is discovered that Mina, Lilith's right-hand woman was the mastermind behind this plot. This is the same Mina that graced the pages of Bram Stoker's novel. How she is still alive and not a vampire is as yet unknown at this point. Some say it is magic. Vampires are quite secretive about their communities.
What is known about Dracula is this. He does seem to be the same Vlad Dracula who was crowned Prince of Wallachia, one of the three Romanian provinces, in 1436 CE. His names include Son of the Dragon, Son of the Devil, and Vlad Tepes (translation: Vlad the Impaler). Vlad imposed a strict moral code upon his people, and crime was extremely low in Wallachia. However, his punishments and atrocities were renowned. Even liars were impaled. However he is still thought of, as a hero is certain circles. He did manage to hold off the Turks from invading Romania for several years and reclaimed his thrown three times.
His death is unclear. Some say that he was assassinated, while others claim that he was killed in battle. What is clear is that Dracula's "human" life ended in 1476 CE. In 1931 Vlad Dracula's grave was unearthed, only to find that the remains inside belonging to an animal, not the Romanian Prince.
The life of the first Tepes-Vampire is shrouded in mystery until in 1897 when an Irish writer published the novel, Dracula. How true the events in the book are to actual historical events is uncertain. Obviously some of it must be based in fact since Mina does exist. Dracula was killed in that year, but his death was short lived. He was resurrected about a year later and the spell he had over Mina returned. She left her husband and returned to the vampire. He did not turn her, but instead cursed her with a type of immortality. Some say it was magic that he used to do this. Shortly before World War One, Lilith killed Dracula. His ashes were enclosed in a silver urn and placed in the Vault of the Council of Three, the last such artifact added to the Vault before Dissolution.

Elizabeth of Bathory:
Opinions vary as to how many women were slaughtered by Countess Bathory. Some say three hundred - others claim it is more like six hundred. Sufficient to say that this psychotic middle-aged noblewoman, widow of the Count Nadasay, killed hundreds of young girls by draining them of their blood by various methods.Bathory's psychotic mania was connected with her own beauty. She believed that the blood of virgins would act as an excellent skin conditioner and she literally bathed in their blood. The Hammer Horror file "Countess Dracula" was based on Elizabeth of Bathory

Gilles de Rais:
He was in the amazing position of being both a national hero and an archetypal villain.Gilles spent five years committing the most incredible crimes of child murder and sodomy. Gilles also indulged in alchemy and sorcery - pursuits that were inextricably linked with the murder of hundreds of children. He kidnapped, raped and dismembered both young boys and girls. The emphasis was on the boys, for Gilles was a rampant homosexual, using his religion as a kind of aesthetic sensuality. Having lured the children into the castle he and his courtiers would set upon them, abusing them sexually and finally murdering them in the most horrible way. After orgies involving massive bloodletting Gilles would retire to bed, seemingly in a state of coma - and would return to the carnage with renewed ferocity. What caused this young Marshal of France to change from a national hero to a monster is difficult to define. There is no doubt that he had led a violent life during which, in the cause of nationalism, he slaughtered hundreds. Perhaps Gilles found it impossible to give up shedding blood.

Countess Misty:
A couple once wrote to me and told me theyneeded a pair of vampire's eyes so that theycould rule the world. They said that if Ididn't send them my eyes in two weeks, theywould come and get them. Did they reallythink I'd be stupid enough to pluck out myeyes and send them to them? How could I seeto address the box if I didn't have my eyes?Countess Misty is possibly one of the most famous of today's "Vampires", she has appeared on TV chat shows and even in books on Vampires. She is no person from history but a living breathing person of the 20th Century. She is not locked up in any Mental institute, but is living free in America. She is also the leader and creator of the "Lost Shadows Gang" which is a group of Blood drinkers.
